TORONTO -- Canada’s largest pharmacy chain said it will soon begin selling its Viagra-branded drug on the streets of Vancouver’s inner city to customers.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, is a prescription drug prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction in men, according to the Vancouver government.
The government, which is considering whether to approve the sale of the drug, said it was making efforts to ensure consumers had access to its medications.
“The pharmacy and the consumer should have access to this medication,” the provincial commission said in a statement.
Viagra’s approval is also in response to a major public health emergency in the U. S., where many men suffer from erectile dysfunction, a condition where a man cannot achieve or maintain an erection.
The prescription drug, known as sildenafil, is the active ingredient in the prescription drug, known in the Canadian version as Viagra, and is used to treat impotence in men.
The government said the sale of the drug was the latest in a series of moves by the Canadian Health Agency to tighten regulations on the sale of medicines.
In October, the government said it would consider allowing consumers to purchase the drug, after which it would be sold under the name “Sildenafil.”
Sildenafil, which is sold under the brand name Viagra, is sold as a prescription drug for erectile dysfunction.
“I am pleased that the government is considering the sale of this prescription drug,” said Mick Foy, the provincial commission’s chief executive.
“Sildenafil is a prescription drug. It is the active ingredient in the prescription drug.”
Dr. Mark Lough, the commission’s health officer, said the government is working on plans to expand the sale of the drug to help more men suffering from erectile dysfunction.
“As the demand for erectile dysfunction medications drops, people in Vancouver may be able to purchase Viagra on the streets of their inner city,” said Lough.
“There is also a number of other medications available on the market that may be able to help with the sexual health concerns, including medications that can help with urinary problems, such as sildenafil.”
The government said it will continue to monitor sales of sildenafil in the coming months as it works to ensure the drug remains available for use.
“There are several other prescription drugs available in the U. S. as well,” said Lough.
“I do believe the government is committed to improving access to safe and effective prescription medicines.
“This includes medications for erectile dysfunction, such as sildenafil and vardenafil.”
The commission said it was pleased to see the government starting to take steps to ensure men who suffer from erectile dysfunction can get safe and effective treatment.
“Our work with men’s health agencies is to work with health authorities to ensure they can make sure they are providing safe and effective treatments and that they are safe and effective for all men,” said Foy.
He noted that the health authority has been consulting on the sale of prescription medicines since 2018.
“We are currently evaluating whether the sale of this prescription drug, when appropriate, could help reduce the risk of some serious side effects, such as erectile dysfunction, in the long run,” said Lough.
“We also are reviewing how the sale of this drug could help improve access to safe and effective treatment for men with erectile dysfunction.”
The government is also working to ensure consumers can access the drug safely, by limiting dispensing and purchasing.
It is unclear if the drug will be available on the streets of Vancouver as the commission said it will do “as needed.”
It is the first time the government has approved a sale of a prescription drug for the sale of a medicine on the streets of the province of British Columbia.
